Nestled on the northeastern shores of Geneva Lake in southeast Wisconsin, Lake Geneva has been a resort community since just after the Civil War when wealthy Chicago families discovered the site and began building summer homes in the area now referred to as, "Newport of the West."

A handful of the original estates are still in existence, having been meticulously restored, while others have been replaced by magnificent architectural masterpieces. Most of the estates are on private roads and can be viewed only from the water or by foot via the 21-mile walking path that circles the lake.

The Lake Geneva area remains a popular destination for visitors from across the Midwest and was featured as the setting in best-selling author James Patterson’s New York Times bestseller, Sam’s Letters to Jennifer.

The beautiful natural surroundings, laid back attitude, lively downtown and understated opulence are apparent, but it’s the wide variety of activities, accommodations and restaurants that help secure the Lake Geneva area as one of the region’s top getaway destinations for both day trippers and overnight guests, and the perfect spot for a romantic interlude.

While best known for its wide range of summer activities, the Lake Geneva area is open 365 days a year, offering a variety of outdoor adventures from fall color tours to cross country and downhill skiing to ice fishing on Geneva Lake, one of Wisconsin’s top rated lakes for pulling in the big ones. There are areas for ice skating and many stables that offer sleigh rides through the rolling countryside.

The largest and most prestigious winter event in the Lake Geneva area is the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Championship (Feb. 4 – Feb. 8) featuring the top snow sculpting teams in the nation. The 3-person teams, traveling from as far away as Alaska, work side-by-side for three bone-chilling days and nights to create intricate, gravity-defying works of art.
