With summer crowds gone and brilliant foliage arriving, fall in Wisconsin offers visitors a variety of opportunities for scenic and memorable getaways. Motorcycle and auto touring enthusiasts are drawn by the state's 16 million acres of vibrantly colored forestland and the scenic byways that wind through them. Craft breweries celebrate with Oktoberfests and other seasonal beers. Group getaways are also popular, many focused on the state's lively performing arts scene.

One of the most beautiful drives is the first Wisconsin Scenic Byway, State Highway 60. This 100-mile stretch along the lower Wisconsin River from Lodi to Prairie du Chien passes through the heart of Wisconsin's hilly Driftless Area. At its western terminus is the state's National Scenic Byway, State Highway 35. Famed for its soaring bluffs and restored Victorian villages, it borders the Mississippi River for 250 miles from Kieler to Prescott.

Wisconsin's craft breweries are a legacy of Wisconsin's strong German and Swiss heritage. Fall is a good time to visit, as many offer seasonal beers and special events. At the New Glarus Brewing Company, guests are welcomed into a new 75,000-square-foot expansion. Designed to look like a Bavarian village, it will double the brewery's output of brews, which are only available in Wisconsin. At Milwaukee's Lakefront Brewery, visitors will see the famous “Three Stooges” fermentation tanks, and taste America's first organic and gluten-free beers.

Fall is also an active season for Wisconsin's performing arts venues. Madison's Overture Center for the Arts hosts a rare live appearance by "Queen of Quirk" Liz Gilbert, author of the best-selling Eat, Pray, Love, while the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center welcomes the iconic Rent, and Milwaukee's Marcus Center for the Performing Arts will feature Grease, starring American Idol winner Taylor Hicks. In addition, several of Wisconsin's renowned summer stock outdoor theaters will offer indoor fall productions, including the Peninsula Players Theatre, American Players Theatre and American Folklore Theatre.
