Provided by Ohio Division of Travel & Tourism FALL/WINTER 2009
Blazing reds, oranges and yellows; Ohio's fall season rivals any state's in the Midwest with an abundance of activities that are ripe for the pickin'.
Ohio's fall foliage season inspires both visitors and locals alike to get out and enjoy the Great Outdoors amid a picture-perfect setting of vibrant colors and crisp, clean smells. Outdoor enthusiasts can often be seen hiking in one of Ohio's 74 state parks, fishing for that day's biggest catch or ziplining through the treetops at Warren County's Ozone Zipline Adventures. Festivals throughout the state celebrate the harvest season and feature culinary delights such as pumpkin pie, apple cider and freshly-picked, home-grown squash. The Ashtabula County Covered Bridge Festival celebrates autumn's brilliant color display with driving tours to enjoy 17 covered bridges, including the country's longest, the Smolen-Gulf Covered Bridge. Hundreds of farm markets dot Ohio's diverse landscape and offer an array of fresh products. The markets make for popular family destinations as families peruse locally grown produce to use in that night's home-cooked meal, treat their children to delicious caramel apples or find the perfect Blue Spruce to complete their holiday home décor.
Winter is an especially remarkable time in Ohio when only wild animals go into hibernation. As the snow falls in Ohio, the landscape changes into a fluffy winter wonderland where outdoor activities and winter festivals abound.
History buffs celebrate the winter solstice and Ohio's rich Native American history at Serpent Mound in Peebles. As the largest serpent effigy in the country, the snake-like mound aligns with the summer and winter solstices. During the holiday season, Ohio's historic downtowns are alive with spirit as town squares and storefronts open up with luminous light displays and holiday parades. At the end of the year, families gather on the shores of Lake Erie in Port Clinton to count down the seconds to the New Year at Walleye Madness at Midnight when a 20-foot, 600-pound fiberglass walleye is lowered at the stroke of midnight in celebration of the new year.
