Don’t let the economy cut into your vacation activities. Missouri offers loads of fun and stimulating things to see and do on a day trip, a weekend or a long vacation. Don’t take less of a vacation; take a vacation for less, in Missouri.
Floating one of Missouri’s cool, spring-fed streams is a great way to get to know each other all over again. Floating outfitters operate on 29 rivers and streams throughout Missouri. Outfitters rent canoes, kayaks, tubes and related equipment for trips as short as an hour or two, or longer floats lasting three or four days. They will shuttle you to and from put-in and take-out points. Facilities may include campgrounds and cabins, RV sites, fire pits and grills, guide services, and a general-store with provisions and groceries; some have a down-home restaurant.
Not into water activities? Take a day or a weekend to visit Missouri’s wineries. The more than 100 wineries scattered across the state offer wine tasting and sales, tours, picnic facilities (some allow you to bring your own picnic basket; some have a restaurant on-site), live musical entertainment, lovely countryside with great views, and a friendly atmosphere. In addition to award-winning grape wines, several Missouri wineries serve a variety of fruit wines and mead. (Mead is wine made from honey and water; it is the oldest form of fermented beverage on earth, dating to around 7,000 B.C.)
Looking for variety? Missouri offers hundreds of fairs, festivals, craft shows, celebrations and events. These activities will charm and entertain, educate and fascinate . . . and food usually is available. The events list grows daily on VisitMO.com. In 2011, Missouri will commemorate the sesquicentennial (the 150th anniversary) of the American Civil War. Overall, Missouri endured more than 1,000 battles and engagements, third only to Virginia and Tennessee. Observances, memorials, lots of reenactments and other Civil War events are scheduled all summer.
