MissouriProvided by Missouri Department of Tourism With a rich history, striking scenery and natural wonders that will leave you breathless, Missouri is the state that truly offers visitors, and its own residents, an experience that's close to home but far from ordinary. Perhaps there's no better way to get acquainted with Missouri's landscape than by visiting one of its more than four dozen state parks. Massive formations highlight Elephant Rocks State Park near Graniteville, trout fishing and cool waters are the hallmarks of Bennett Spring State Park near Lebanon, and ancient history can be traced underground at Graham Cave State Park near Montgomery City. Those seeking a faster pace will find more activities in Missouri's largest metro areas. St. Louis is known for the Gateway Arch, but there's also plenty to do at places like The Loop and Laclede's Landing. Kansas City, famous for barbecue and jazz music, is also home to the Country Club Plaza and the Power & Light District. Springfield offers a variety of modern and historic sites, while Columbia – home of the University of Missouri – is a hot spot for those seeking fun when the sun goes down. If it's a night of fun you're looking for, perhaps there's no better place than Branson, the city synonymous with live music and shows. Missouri is home to many famous faces. The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Independence honors the only Missourian elected president, while the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Home and Museum in Mansfield examines the life of the "Little House" author. There's also the J.C. Penney Museum in Hamilton, the Jesse James Home in Kearney or the James Home Museum in St. Joseph, and the small town of Marceline, where Walt Disney spent a formative part of his youth. And don't forget Mark Twain, whose life is celebrated at many venues around the Mississippi River town of Hannibal and at his birthplace in Paris. On your travels, pay attention to the many small cities that dot Missouri's landscape and offer hidden treasures for the keen observer.
