The Arrowhead region of Minnesota finds itself knee-deep in snow most winters. And, with its near-wilderness setting, the northeastern tip of the state is a popular winter adventure destination. On the hills, along the trails, on a dogsled–you have your pick of fun adventures.
With plenty of hilly terrain, this neck of the woods is home to three major downhill ski areas: Spirit Mountain in Duluth, Lutsen Mountains along the north shore of Lake Superior, and Giants Ridge in Biwabik on the Iron Range.
Lutsen Mountains is the biggest Midwest ski area. Adventurous skiers relish the steep mogul runs, the challenging black-diamonds, and the 20 backcountry runs that wander through cedar and maple glens. The terrain parks at Spirit Mountain and Giants Ridge challenge snowboarders with rails, pipes and jumps. All three downhill areas also offer more easygoing slopes for those who aren’t seeking high adventure.
North of Lutsen, the Gunflint Trail heads inland from Grand Marais. The 200-plus kilometers of cross-country ski trails along the Gunflint Trail are a work of art: meticulously groomed to keep them fresh, and passing through a winter wonderland of snow-laced pines in the Superior National Forest. Skate-skiers will find over 90 kilometers of trails groomed just for them.
Several resorts tucked into the woods cater to skiers, with accommodations ranging from rustic to luxurious. A soak in a hot tub and a gourmet meal are a fine way to top off an exhilarating day on the trail. Northern lights dancing in the night sky and wolves howling across the frozen lake are other special surprises on a Gunflint getaway.
There are also nine separate trails marked and groomed for snowshoeing, 25 miles in all, exploring woods surrounding the Gunflint Trail. In March, the Gunflint Trail delivers winter fun during the Winter Tracks Festival, with dog sled rides, sledding, snow sculptures and much more. Adventurous skiers can also explore a vast network of trails that wander over the steep hills along the Lake Superior bluffs, especially in the Lutsen-Tofte area.
