Minnesota

FALL/WINTER 2007

There are 22 scenic byways in Minnesota where the fall foliage is dressed out in the finest colors of the season. Along the way, you’ll find parks, unique shops, biking/hiking trails, golf courses and scenic overlooks.
Hwy. 210 between Carlton and Duluth

At nine miles, this is the shortest of the byways. Located just off bustling I-35, this quieter, less-trafficked route offers its own spectacular scenery: the tumbling, root beer- colored waters of the St. Louis River rapids and the rugged, wooded hills of Jay Cooke State Park. Plan to hike or bike on one of the many miles of trails. Willard Munger State Trail descends along a ridgeline from the park down to the outskirts of Duluth, and offers incredible views of the forest.
County roads E of Hwy.371, N of Brainerd

Pelican and Cross lakes and the Whitefish Chain of Lakes sparkle amid woods of maple, oak, birch and aspen. Some of Minnesota’s best golfing is in this area, and a paved bike trail runs along the road. This area is as legendary as the giant lumberjack for whom the scenic byway and bike trail are named. The water tower in Pequot Lakes is painted to look like Paul Bunyan’s fishing bobber.
Hwy. 95 between I-94 and North Branch

This section of the byway offers views of the scenic St. Croix River and runs through the charming rivertowns of Stillwater and Taylors Falls. Picnic or hike in one of the state parks along the way. Take a boat trip along the St. Croix. This stretch of the byway is an extremely popular fall color route, so plan on a weekday drive.
Hwy. 16 between LaCrescent and Dexter

This picturesque corner of the state is a land of wooded hills, deep ravines, meandering streams and peaceful valleys. The bluffs are cloaked with hardwood forest. This 88-mile drive follows the winding Root River past farmland and through small towns. Cozy inns, antique shops, art galleries all draw visitors. Many of the towns on this route have nine hole courses which have been referred to as a string of golf pearls.

As the curtain of fall color drops from north to south, weekly reports track the display. The report also gives details on fall flowers, bird migrations and other seasonal highlights. Visit www.exploreminnesota.com.
