SPRING/SUMMER 2008

Duluth is what you make it – everything you want, and exactly what you need. Restful. Rejuvenating. Dynamic. Exhilarating. It’s an uncommon paradise, perched on the shores of the world’s largest lake, Lake Superior.

This lake is part of everything we do here, and it’s one of the most compelling reasons to visit. You’ll see 1,000-foot freighters slip under the famous Aerial Lift Bridge. You’ll see sailboats silhouetted against a purple and orange Lake Superior sunrise. Simply stand along the shore, and take in the view that goes on forever.

This summer, the Duluth harbor will play host to three tall ships. The Pride of Baltimore II, the U.S. Brig Niagara, and the schooner Madeline will dock, anchoring the city’s Maritime Festival. The three-day fete, set for August 1-3, will feature ship tours, food, entertainment, crafts and music in honor of Minnesota’s 150th anniversary.

Discovery meets plain old fun at the Great Lakes Aquarium, the only aquarium in the country that focuses on freshwater marine life. Kids will love the Great Lakes Water Table, where they can guide boats in and out of locks and dams. If you can’t get enough water, check out our large indoor waterpark, The Edge.

Love sports? Grab your running shoes – or a lawn chair – and join us June 19-21 for the 32nd annual Grandma’s Marathon weekend. It’s the 12th largest marathon in the country, and arguably one of the most beautiful, with a course that follows the North Shore Scenic Drive. If running 26.2 miles isn’t quite your thing, there’s a half-marathon, a family-friendly 5K, a popular pasta dinner and plenty of entertainment.

The 20th Annual Bayfront Blues Festival, August 7-10, draws thousands of music lovers and over 30 national acts, food, drink and fun. If you just can’t get enough blues during the day, you can head out to local clubs at night for a little more. Best of all? You get to enjoy the sounds with Lake Superior in your sights.
