SPRING/SUMMER 2009

Looking to experience something different this travel season? Then venture off the beaten path to some of Iowa's more unique attractions.

LeMars is home to Wells' Dairy, makers of Blue Bunny Ice Cream. This family-friendly museum provides a look at the history of ice cream and the history of Wells' Dairy, including a simulated production exhibit. After the tour, enjoy a tasty treat in the 1920s-style ice cream parlor. Early morning visitors can enjoy cinnamon rolls topped with icing made from melted ice cream.

Visit the Danish Windmill Museum. This authentic windmill was built in Denmark in 1848 and transported to Elk Horn in 1975. The mill grinds wheat and rye by wind power. View a 15-minute video, and a guide will give a tour of the 60-foot mill, gears and grinding stones.

Don't miss the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. The historic ballroom where big bands played and Buddy Holly gave his last concert is now a Rock ‘n' Roll Landmark. It boasts a wide variety of Big Band-era and rock ‘n' roll mementos on the walls as well as the famous – and still operational – cloud machine. Opened in August 2008, Honey Creek Resort State Park on the shores of Lake Rathbun is Iowa's first destination state park. The campus includes a 108-room lodge, 28 cabins (to open summer 2009), restaurant and lounge, indoor waterpark, 18-hole golf course, extensive educational and recreational facilities, interpretive programs and multipurpose trails.

Take a historical and spiritual trip into the world of the American buffalo at Hawkeye Buffalo Ranch. Participate in a Lakota Sioux “smudge feather” ceremony, then ride into the herd of buffalo and feed them by hand. Buffalo dinners and lunches available.

Housed in an 1856 building listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Wilton Candy Kitchen is considered the oldest ongoing ice cream parlor/soda fountain/confectionery in the world. Found in 1860, it serves George's homemade ice cream, phosphates, lunches and candy. Wilton history is featured in a museum room.
