Dubuque, Iowa
Provided by the Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce SPRING/SUMMER 2009
Nestled in the bluffs of the meandering Mississippi River, Dubuque, Iowa, is a wonderful destination for your next getaway.
Historically speaking, Dubuque is full of opportunities to see and experience life on the Mississippi as it was hundreds of years ago. While this community of 60,000 revels in its past, Dubuque is at the same time looking to the future and sharing its excitement with you through some of its newest amenities, namely the America's River Project, a nearly $400 million riverfront renaissance!
America's River is part history, part recreation, part education – and all excitement! It offers the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, Mississippi Riverwalk, The Grand Harbor Resort and Waterpark, casino-style gambling and more.
There's an adventure at every turn as you enter the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium – a Smithsonian Institute affiliate. Come nose-to-nose with an alligator, otters, diving ducks, frogs, turtles and snakes of America's most famous river. The 70-foot wall of water that makes up the main channel aquarium is a visitor favorite. Experience firsthand a variety of critters from an eight-foot gator to a one-inch tree frog.
The success of the America's River project has created surging momentum with additional growth and new development. This can be seen in the $80 million construction of a new land-based Diamond Jo Casino that opened in December 2008. This full service casino and entertainment venue includes a 30-lane bowling center.
The Mystique Casino has completed its second renovation since the launch of America's River. This state-of-the-art casino features 1,000 slot machines, Vegas-style table games and heart-pumping excitement of live greyhound racing.
The Star Brewery has been restored and renovated which features Stone Cliff Winery and the Star Restaurant and Ultra Lounge.
The Hotel Julien, a 150-year-old historic hotel, is currently undergoing a $28 million dollar renovation. Guests will experience the perfect blend of historic character and modern refinement in this full-service, luxury hotel.
