Iowa
Provided by the Iowa Division of Tourism FALL/WINTER 2009
Iowa's tourism season extends year-round. In fact, the two reigning events of the year are both winter events. As travelers plan their fall and winter getaways, consider the following options in Iowa.
Looking for a new way to see fall colors? Try a scenic drive along the Historic Hills Scenic Byway in southern Iowa. The drive goes through the quaint Villages of Van Buren, included in the best selling travel book "1000 Places to See in the U.S. and Canada." At the western edge of the byway is Honey Creek Resort State Park, Iowa's first destination state park with a lodge, hotel, indoor waterpark, 18-hole golf course, cabins and trails. The resort, nestled on the shores of 11,000-acre Rathbun Lake, also offers water amenities.
The University of Okoboji Winter Games are held annually in January in Okoboji. The fictional university's winter festival includes broomball tournaments, cross country skiing, ice bowling, the Burning of the Greens (a ceremonial bonfire of Christmas trees from the community) and more.
The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium Ice Fest in Dubuque, dubbed the "coolest event of the year," includes snow sculpting, ice carving demonstrations, ice harvesting from the Ice Harbor, traditional American Indian games, ice safety programs and special winter treats. Grand Harbor Resort on the banks of the Mississippi River serves as the official "igloo" of the festival. Kids will love the indoor water park.
For those who prefer to spend the winter months indoors, Iowa has that covered, too. King's Pointe Resort in Storm Lake features the most cutting-edge water slide technology in the Midwest. The Electric Eel, located in the 20,000-square-foot indoor water park, allows riders to select one of several adventure themes–ranging from sharks and bears to storms and sea creatures–then experience the sights and sounds of that theme during the 291-foot descent.
