FALL/WINTER 2008

Fall in love with Iowa this year. Once you're there, you'll find it isn't hard to do. Whether you enjoy scenic drives, family fun or just getting away from it all, Iowa has you covered.

Looking for a new way to see fall colors? Try a scenic drive along the Great River Road on Iowa's eastern border. The road offers stunning views from atop Mississippi River Bluffs. In Dubuque, climb aboard the Fenelon Place Elevator, the world's shortest, steepest scenic railway, and enjoy views from three states. Be sure to take the short – and scenic – drive north to Balltown and enjoy a meal at Breitbach Country Dining, Iowa's oldest restaurant, which recently reopened after a devastating fire last winter.

On the western edge of Iowa, the Loess Hill National Scenic Byway allows travelers to explore the rare and spectacular natural landscaping of the Loess Hills region, a fragile place of unique prairie flora and wildlife, farms and villages, nestled together among the catstep hills. Bluestem and scarlet sumac ripen under the big skies atop this rich yellow-brown loess – ancient soil gathered by winds of a receding age of ice into a high wall that follows the vast Missouri River Valley. The rugged range rises abruptly from the flatlands on the west and melts into the rolling plains on the east, extending 200 miles.

Families can enjoy searching for the best pumpkin in one of many "u-pick" patches across the state and test their navigation abilities in a corn maze. Or relieve sunny summer days at an indoor waterpark. King's Pointe Resort in Storm Lake boasts the most cutting-edge waterslide technology in the Midwest! Honey Creek Resort State Park, which opened in September, is Iowa's first destination state park and offers a lodge, water amenities, an indoor waterpark, an 18-hole golf course and educational opportunities for children and adults alike.
