Indiana
Provided by the Indiana Office of Tourism Development FALL/WINTER 2008
Indiana is known for its scenic beauty and charming small towns, creating a perfect backdrop for your next getaway! Each fall, Indiana’s hills and countryside come alive as trees pop with color. The Ohio River Scenic Byway is a great way to enjoy the autumn views. The byway follows the Ohio River in Southern Indiana, taking visitors near several historic small towns such as Madison and Corydon. Other sites to see along the way include the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in Spencer County and the Hoosier National Forest.
Indiana’s state parks are very popular in the fall. Spring Mill State Park, Brown County State Park and Fort Harrison State Park are just a few of the many parks that offer outdoor recreation opportunities. When the snow falls, visitors flock to Pokagon State Park in Angola to experience the popular toboggan run.
Festivals are an important part of Indiana tourism. Hoosiers celebrate food such as apples and blueberries, as well as another tasty agricultural snack. Brazil, Indiana, home of Orville Redenbacher, celebrates the Popcorn Festival of Clay County in early October. Visitors from the Midwest and beyond visit Parke County for the annual Covered Bridge Festival.
Many towns get into the holiday spirit each year, but one notable Indiana town is known for celebrating Christmas all year long. Santa Claus, Indiana, is famous for its name and the many Santa-themed businesses. The town is home to the award-winning Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari amusement park.
A wonderful display of lights celebrates the holiday season on Monument Circle in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. The Circle of Lights© is a long-standing tradition featuring more than 4,700 lights and 52 strands of garland strung from the top of the 242-foot Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument. The Paramount Festival of Trees in Anderson at the Paramount Theatre features more than 100 decorated trees and wreaths. And the annual Walkway of Lights in downtown Marion and Matter Park is a spectacular display of two million lights that can be enjoyed by walking or driving.
