Indiana
Provided by the Indiana Office of Tourism Development FALL/WINTER 2009
The fall and winter seasons are a perfect time to visit Indiana, from small town getaways to scenic drives along the rolling hills of Southern Indiana. During the fall months, trees come alive with color, dotting the landscape with breathtaking views. Many travelers don't think of Indiana as wine country, but the state boasts nearly 40 wineries and three wine trails. Learn how grapes grown in the Hoosier state are used to create award-winning wines. The Heritage Trail driving tour through Amish Country in Elkhart County is a great way to experience the rural beauty of Northern Indiana and see where more than 20,000 Amish make their home.
The Ohio River Scenic Byway offers picturesque views any time of the year. The byway follows the Ohio River in Southern Indiana, taking visitors near several historic small towns such as Madison and Corydon. Other sites to see along the way include the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in Spencer County and the Hoosier National Forest.
Indiana's state parks are very popular in the fall. Spring Mill State Park, Brown County State Park and Fort Harrison State Park are just a few of the many parks that offer outdoor recreation opportunities. When the snow falls, visitors flock to Pokagon State Park in Angola to ride the popular toboggan slide.
Festivals are an important part of Indiana tourism. Hoosiers celebrate food such as apples and blueberries, as well as another tasty agricultural snack. Brazil, Ind., home of Orville Redenbacher, celebrates the Popcorn Festival of Clay County in early October. Visitors from the Midwest and beyond visit Parke County for the annual Covered Bridge Festival.
Get into the holiday spirit with one of many activities in Indiana during November and December. Christmas at the Zoo and Holiday Trainland at the Indianapolis Zoo will lift your spirits with model trains, music, special food, a million sparkling lights and, of course, Santa. The Old Fashioned Christmas Walk in historic Metamora offers a festive glimpse of this 19th-century canal town with decorated shops, carolers, and a visit from Santa.
