SPRING/SUMMER 2010

Hike, bike, canoe, picnic, or simply wander in two state parks and over 20,000 acres of conservation land all a short drive northwest of Chicago in McHenry County. If boating or horseback riding is your thing, you can do that too in McHenry County. The Fox River and Chain O’ Lakes region offer some of Chicagoland’s finest water recreation.

The McHenry County Prairie Trail bike path traverses the county as it passes through charming small towns and the spectacular Glacial Park. Metra’s Bicycles on Trains program allows easy access to the Prairie Trail and makes a great low-cost cycling weekend with several lodging options located close to the trail. Campgrounds dot the county and offer a real outdoor experience. From full-service family friendly camping to rustic sites, escape to the great outdoors. Be sure to visit family-friendly attractions such as the Illinois Railway Museum (America’s largest railway museum), Prime Outlets-Huntley and the Volo Auto Museum with over 300 classic, collector and muscle cars and the kids-favorite Hollywood Movie & TV car collection.

Take time to explore the quaint communities of McHenry County. Charming downtown districts are filled with antiques, one-of-a-kind finds, fashion, food and world class entertainment. Stroll the brick-paved streets of the historic Woodstock Square. The 1889 gothic Opera House and 1852 Old Court House stand guard over dozens of cafes, boutiques and galleries that surround the park-in-the-square. The City of McHenry’s new Riverwalk has sparked a Renaissance in this river town. The waterfront promenade connects the city’s shopping, dining and entertainment neighborhoods with the Fox River where you can dine alfresco or enjoy a wine tasting.

Not to be missed: late summer and fall is harvest season with farm markets, apple orchards, pumpkin patches, seasonal festivals and the “world’s largest” corn maze.

Enjoy the full-filled days and then spend star-filled night at one of McHenry County’s comfortable hotels or charming bed and breakfasts. Log on to www.visitmchenrycounty.com or call 888-363-6177 for visitor information, calendar of events and assistance.
